The Roncal Valley is a different location to the rest of the Foral Community of Navarre Its inhabitants have their own culture and their own identity. There are very many activities of all kinds on offer in this valley at any time of the year.
Culturally, its towns are precious vestiges of the past where you can take pleasure in the typical architecture and the very best local cuisine. The valley is home to hidden-away spots where we can enjoy many different sports such as hiking or cycling, and a number of very famous sports competitions take place every year. The Roncal Valley opens up a world of contrasting weather and landscapes. The rives Ezka is the vertebral column of this harmonious land of towns, woods and high mountain pasture.
The vegetation is dominated by black pine, rhododendrons, bilberries, junipers... The beech-fir woods are predominant at the lower altitudes. The most emblematic animals of the region are the brown bear, grouse, Pyrenean mountain goat, rock ptarmigan, grey partridge, white-backed woodpecker, black woodpecker, Tengmalm’s Owl (Boreal owl) and the wallcreeper.
This region boasts the highest mountains of Navarre (Mesa de los Tres Reyes), as well as the deepest chasms (the San Martín Abyss). North of Isaba, the Belagua Valley opens its doors, where we can find numerous megalithic remains such as the Sakulo and Arrako dolmens.
This noble town stands to the north of the Pyrenean valley of Roncal, at the foot of the Belagua valley, bathed by the waters of the river Esca, and surrounded by rugged mountains. It lies at an altitude of 809 metres and is bordered by Bearne and Zuberoa (France) to the north, Ansó (Huesca) to the east, the Salazar Valley and the Irati Forest to the west, and Aragón to the south. The Monastery of Leire, the Castle of Xavier, and the Arbayún and Lumbier Gorges are all located nearby.
Discover the narrow cobbled streets, lined with harmonious mansion houses in stone and wood, with their steep gabled roofs that prevent snow from building up on them. In the town centre, the church-fortress of San Cipriano rises up majestically, dating back to the 16th century. The stones used for its reconstruction are thought to have been taken from an ancient castle situated in the upper part of the town, where you can enjoy panoramic views of Isaba. And for an excellent example of the noble coats of arms popular in Isaba you should take a look at the one on the Uturrotx fountain, where the history of the valley is carved out. Although the best way to get to know the identity and history of the Roncal Valley is to visit the Casa de la Memoria de Isaba (House of the Memory of Isaba).
The Roncal Valley has a Nordic ski resort named TERRITORIO RONCALIA, and, on the French side just 30 km from our hotel, the ALPINE SKI RESORT of “LA PIERRE SAINT MARTIN”. It also has many paths and crossings for you to enjoy snowshoeing whilst taking in the breathtaking scenery.
